Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Libya’s Sovereign Solution

NEW YORK( The COW News Digital)Pakistan has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and a Libyan-led political process during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Addressing the Council, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Usman Iqbal Jadoon, reiterated that Pakistan fully backs a Libyan-owned and Libyan-led roadmap as the only path toward lasting peace and stability in the country.

Ambassador Jadoon praised UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh for her ongoing efforts to foster political reconciliation and national harmony in Libya. He also appreciated the United Kingdom’s constructive engagement in advancing the implementation of the political roadmap.

Referring to the UN Secretary-General’s strategic review of UNSMIL, the ambassador emphasized that the proposed reforms should aim to make the mission more flexible, efficient, and results-oriented, in line with Libya’s evolving political realities.

Outlining five key priorities, Ambassador Jadoon stressed:

  1. Full support for the Special Representative’s political roadmap.
  2. Completion of the transitional phase.
  3. Institutional stability and governance reform.
  4. Conduct of inclusive national elections.
  5. Establishment of a clear timeline to ensure Libyan ownership and participation in the political process.

He welcomed the High National Election Commission’s initiative to organize 34 municipal elections, calling it an important step toward democratic legitimacy once peace and stability are restored.

On the security front, Jadoon hailed the continuation of the ceasefire in Tripoli as a positive sign and urged greater confidence-building and coordination between security committees to prevent escalation and strengthen peace efforts.

Touching upon Libya’s economic challenges, the Pakistani envoy lauded efforts to unify the national budget and ensure transparent monitoring of frozen assets in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2769. He proposed issuing an Implementation Assistance Notice to help international financial institutions address legal ambiguities affecting Libya’s financial management.

Concluding his statement, Ambassador Jadoon reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to a stable, independent, and united Libya, emphasizing Islamabad’s readiness to continue constructive engagement with the United Nations and the Libyan people.
