NEW YORK — Pakistan and the Federated States of Micronesia, a Pacific island nation in the western Pacific Ocean, have officially established diplomatic relations, marking a new chapter of cooperation between the two countries.

The formal agreement was signed at the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations in New York. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram’s successor, Ambassador Aamir Iftikhar Ahmed, and Micronesia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe, inked the joint communiqué that cements bilateral relations.

The signing ceremony was attended by diplomats from both missions, including Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Aamir Iftikhar Ahmed expressed great pleasure that the diplomatic ties were being formalized on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day anniversary. He highlighted that the partnership would open new avenues of cooperation in areas such as human resource development, capacity building, and climate change mitigation.

He added that the two nations’ missions at the United Nations would work closely on matters related to global peace and security, as well as other pressing international issues. The ambassador also noted with pride that Pakistan had become the 100th country to establish diplomatic relations with Micronesia.

Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe, in his remarks, welcomed the new era of bilateral engagement, calling it an honor to represent his country in formalizing friendship and partnership with Pakistan. He expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support in establishing UN offices in Micronesia and said he looked forward to working with his Pakistani counterpart to deepen ties.

The Micronesian envoy also congratulated Pakistan on its Independence Day and reaffirmed his country’s willingness to cooperate on shared priorities.

Before the ceremony, the two ambassadors held a brief meeting to discuss potential collaboration both bilaterally and within the UN framework. They also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, including sustainable development, environmental challenges, and regional cooperation.

Diplomatic observers see the move as a step toward strengthening Pakistan’s outreach in the Pacific region, while also giving Micronesia a stronger presence within the UN network. The establishment of formal ties could lead to new partnerships in trade, development, and multilateral diplomacy.
