State Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja has denied government involvement in the recent internet slowdown across Pakistan, instead attributing it to the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) by internet users. She claimed that the government did not block or slow down the internet, despite expert opinions suggesting otherwise.

The minister’s statement comes after millions of Pakistanis faced trouble accessing internet services due to limited connectivity, particularly while using mobile data. Several experts, including the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP), blame the phenomenon on increased security and surveillance due to the installation of a firewall in the country.
