Pakistan has expressed grave concern over the recurring incidents of theft and illicit sale of nuclear and other radioactive materials in India. The Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, stated that these incidents call into question the safety and security measures taken by India for nuclear and radioactive materials.
The latest incident involved the arrest of three individuals in Bihar, India, for possessing 50 grams of radioactive californium worth $100 million. Pakistan has highlighted similar incidents in the past, including the seizure of stolen radioactive material in 2021 and the arrest of individuals with a radioactive device stolen from the Bhabha Atomic Research Center.
Pakistan has called for a thorough investigation into these incidents and for adequate measures to prevent their recurrence. The FO spokesperson emphasized that the international community seeks earnest disclosure from Indian authorities on how sensitive materials like californium end up in the wrong hands.
