Peshawar – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, has stated that no decision has been made regarding an operation in the Tirah and Jani Khel areas. He emphasized that the issue in Kurram is not related to terrorism but rather a dispute between two groups. He also asserted that no armed group would be allowed to possess illegal heavy weapons or establish bunkers.
Speaking at the 19th provincial cabinet meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, Gandapur clarified that the region’s security situation had led to the initiation of a helicopter service to address the travel issues faced by local residents. In the past two days, 220 people have been transported via the provincial government’s helicopters.
Further updates included the formation of a Special Police Force to ensure the safety of the Parachinar road, which is crucial for restoring ground contact with Kurram. A total of 399 personnel will be recruited for this purpose, and temporary posts will be set up initially, with plans for permanent ones in the future.
The meeting also decided that after a settlement between the two factions, the road will be reopened. Additionally, social media accounts promoting sectarian hatred will be blocked by the FIA, and all illegal weapons will need to be surrendered by February 1. A special desk will be set up by the Home Department to issue licenses for legal weapons. Moreover, all bunkers in the region will be demolished by the same deadline.
Gandapur emphasized that the issue in Kurram is not a matter of terrorism, but a dispute between two groups. He added that while the people of the area want peace, certain elements are trying to stir sectarian tensions and create a false narrative around the issue. He further stated that there is no justification for the possession of heavy illegal weapons and the construction of bunkers. The provincial government is making every effort through negotiations and jirgas to resolve the issue peacefully.
The Chief Minister concluded by stating that the government will not compromise on ensuring the protection of people’s lives and property and that no decision has been made to carry out an operation in the Tirah and Jani Khel areas.
