New CM’s election in doubt as KP governor rejects Gandapur’s resignation

Peshawar( The COW News Digital)The acceptance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s resignation has once again been delayed after Governor Faisal Kundi raised objections and returned the resignation, citing that the signatures on both letters were different, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said that the signatures on the two resignation letters submitted by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur were not identical.

The KP governor has summoned Ali Amin Gandapur to the Governor’s House on October 15 at 3 pm to verify his signatures in person.In response to the governor’s statement on social media, former Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur confirmed through his post on X that the signatures on both resignation letters are indeed his.

Gandapur stated in his tweet, “I confirm that both resignation letters bear my signatures,” adding that the governor himself had now confirmed receiving the resignation dated October 8.Following the controversy, uncertainty now surrounds the election of the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which was scheduled to take place today at the KP Assembly.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) backed candidate, Sohail Afridi, is among four contenders for the top post.

The other candidates include Lutfur Rehman from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), Zarak Khan from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Sardar Shah Jehan from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), all of whose nomination papers have been approved.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly is set to hold its session today, where the election of the new Chief Minister is listed on the agenda.

The assembly comprises 145 members, with 93 members on the government’s side and 52 in opposition. To be elected as Chief Minister, a candidate must secure at least 73 votes.
