Galle( The COW News Digital)Bangladesh’s veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim has etched his name into cricketing history by breaking a long-standing record held by Pakistan’s legendary Test cricketer Younis Khan.

During the first Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, Rahim scored a brilliant century—his 12th in Test cricket—becoming the oldest non-opener to score a Test century in Sri Lanka, surpassing Younis Khan’s 2015 feat.

Mushfiqur Rahim, aged 38 years and 39 days, achieved this milestone in challenging batting conditions, showcasing patience, skill, and resilience. He surpassed Younis Khan, who had scored a Test century on Sri Lankan soil in 2015 at the age of 37 years and 216 days.

Rahim’s composed knock of 163 runs was the backbone of Bangladesh’s innings and significantly contributed to the team’s commanding position at the end of Day 2. His performance was not only a personal triumph but also a historic moment for Bangladesh cricket, highlighting his continued value to the national side even in the later stages of his career.

Alongside Rahim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a captain’s innings of 148 runs, while Liton Das contributed a solid 90, steering Bangladesh to a formidable total of 484/9 at stumps on Day 2.

The innings reflects a dominant batting display by Bangladesh in foreign conditions, a rare and significant feat. The experienced middle order laid the foundation for what could be a match-defining total.

Rahim’s record has sparked celebrations across the cricketing world, especially among Bangladeshi fans, who view him as one of the nation’s most dependable and beloved cricketers. His longevity and consistency in the game continue to inspire the next generation of Bangladeshi cricketers.

The ongoing Test match is part of a multi-match series, and Bangladesh’s impressive performance on Sri Lankan soil could set the tone for the remainder of the tour.

With this record-breaking innings, Mushfiqur Rahim once again proves why he is one of the cornerstones of Bangladesh’s cricketing legacy.
