KARACHI (The COW News Digital) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a significant intensification of the ongoing monsoon spell from today, warning of heavy rains across Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Kashmir. Karachi, already witnessing light drizzle in several areas overnight, is also expected to receive widespread showers in the coming days.

According to PMD officials, the system is likely to bring heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in various parts of the country. “From today, the monsoon currents will strengthen, leading to intense spells of rain particularly in Karachi, Sindh, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir,” the Met Office said in its advisory.

In Dera Ismail Khan, torrential downpours on Saturday submerged low-lying neighborhoods, disrupting normal life and triggering concerns of further flooding. Meanwhile, the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, along with Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, and Attock, face the risk of cloudbursts, the PMD warned.

The Meteorological Department has also issued alerts for parts of Sindh and Balochistan, where heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until August 22. Officials cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, as urban flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure cannot be ruled out.

At the same time, rivers across the country are swelling under the impact of persistent rain. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) Lahore confirmed that the Indus River is currently experiencing medium-level flooding at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa barrages, while Guddu Barrage is witnessing low-level flooding.

Similarly, the Sutlej River has reported low-level floods at Head Sulemanki and Ganda Singh Wala. Authorities have deployed monitoring teams and rescue services at sensitive points to ensure timely evacuation and assistance, if required.

Disaster management officials have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas, remain away from overflowing rivers, and follow safety guidelines during the rainy spell. Emergency teams, including Rescue 1122 and provincial disaster management authorities, have been placed on high alert to respond to any crisis situation.

With the intensity of the monsoon expected to peak in the coming days, meteorologists stressed the importance of precautionary measures to minimize losses. The PMD will continue to issue updated forecasts as the weather system progresses across the country.
