Background

The convictions stem from the May 9 violence following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The unrest targeted military and government facilities, including the General Headquarters (GHQ), Jinnah House, and various cantonments across the country.

International Reactions and PTI’s Stance

The sentences have drawn criticism from international organizations, including the European Union, United States, and United Kingdom, who raised concerns about the use of military courts for civilian trials. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has condemned the sentences, calling them unconstitutional and vowing to challenge the decisions in higher courts.

These verdicts follow an earlier announcement of sentences for 25 individuals in the same case. The military remains steadfast in ensuring justice and maintaining the state’s authority, according to the ISPR.
