Maria Branyas Morera, World’s Oldest Person, Passes Away at 117

Maria Branyas Morera, the world’s oldest known person, has passed away at the age of 117. Born in the US in 1907, Branyas lived through two world wars, the Spanish civil war, and two pandemics. Her family announced her peaceful passing on social media, saying she died as she wished – in her sleep, without pain.

Branyas’s remarkable life spanned over a century, and she was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person in January 2023. She lived in a nursing home in Spain for the past two decades and had survived Covid-19 in 2020.

Her family attributed her longevity to genetics, while Branyas believed it was due to a combination of factors, including order, tranquility, good connections, and positivity. Researchers from the University of Barcelona studied her DNA to determine the causes of her longevity and were impressed by her lucid mind and good health.

With Branyas’s passing, Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, born in 1908, becomes the oldest living person at 116 years old.
