Islamabad( The COW News Digital)Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, emphasized the critical importance of the Kala Bagh Dam for Pakistan’s water and flood management, urging dialogue with those who have reservations about the project. Speaking to the media after a party meeting at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, Gandapur highlighted the devastating impact of recent floods and heavy rains, noting that the lack of timely dam construction has exacerbated damages across the country.

“The Kala Bagh Dam is essential for the state, and if anyone has concerns, they should be addressed through discussion,” said Gandapur. He added that the provincial government is ready to contribute its share for the dam’s construction and called upon other provinces to participate to make the project feasible.

Gandapur highlighted that delays in building dams in the past have led to severe losses during flood seasons. “Our province has already completed six dams, including Hingol and Gomal Zam, which have significantly reduced damages. We are now constructing additional dams across various districts to mitigate future risks,” he explained.

The Chief Minister also discussed the measures being taken to protect Peshawar, stating that the Jaba Dam is under construction and protective walls are being erected in Budhni to shield the city from floodwaters. These measures are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the province’s flood preparedness and disaster management infrastructure.

Addressing public concerns regarding unusual weather events, Gandapur noted that a cloudburst occurred in Buner due to heat-induced atmospheric conditions and clarified that it was unrelated to tree coverage. He mentioned that Swiss-style nets will be installed to prevent rocks and debris from being swept away during floods, ensuring enhanced safety for local communities.

The CM’s remarks have drawn attention nationwide, as the Kala Bagh Dam debate has long been a contentious issue, with discussions revolving around provincial concerns, environmental impacts, and water resource management. By offering to lead the project collaboratively and contribute financially, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa aims to set a precedent for inter-provincial cooperation in critical infrastructure development.

Gandapur’s strong advocacy reflects growing calls for sustainable flood control measures, highlighting the urgency of comprehensive planning and the need for a coordinated approach to water management in Pakistan. His proactive stance has earned appreciation from several quarters, with many viewing it as a significant step toward mitigating the recurrent flood crises.
