Former federal minister and senior PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique has voiced his concerns against the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), emphasizing the need for consultation with media organizations.
In a statement on social media platform X, Rafique acknowledged that fake news is a significant issue but stressed that no government should have unlimited power to tighten its grip on citizens. He urged authorities to engage with media representatives before implementing such laws.
Rafique proposed that appeals against tribunal decisions under the PECA law should be directed to high courts to ensure the protection of fundamental rights. He further called for necessary amendments in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Reminding lawmakers of historical precedents, Rafique warned:
“The stick of laws often turns against those who create them as time changes.”
