Muzaffarabad, Srinagar (NNI): Kashmiris across the globe, including both sides of the Line of Control and Pakistan, observed Right to Self-Determination Day on January 5. This date marks the 1949 resolution passed by the United Nations Commission, granting Kashmiris the right to self-determination through a plebiscite. However, India has continued to deny the people of Jammu and Kashmir their fundamental rights and freedoms.

Every year, Kashmiris renew their commitment to their struggle on this day. The resolution, which grants Kashmiris the right to make their own decision, remains unfulfilled as India consistently violates United Nations resolutions. The observance of the day includes protests against India across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and a memorandum will also be presented to the UN Military Observer Group in Muzaffarabad, urging the international community to honor its commitments to the Kashmiri people.

Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Anwarul Haq, expressed that the United Nations has failed to fulfill its promise to Kashmiris. He stated that the Kashmiri struggle is ultimately for the completion of Pakistan, and the sacrifices of martyrs will not go in vain. Haq reaffirmed that Kashmiris will eventually achieve their goal through self-determination. He emphasized that the United Nations had guaranteed the right to self-determination through a neutral plebiscite, and fulfilling this promise is a core responsibility of the UN.

Despite enduring Indian oppression, Kashmiris continue to stand firm in their demand for self-determination, and Haq warned India that blocking this path would have dire consequences for the country.
