In a groundbreaking move, the Sindh government has announced the launch of Pakistan’s first electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi. This initiative aims to combat the alarming levels of air pollution in the city and provide a cleaner and more affordable transportation option for the masses.
The transport department will be operating 200 electric taxis in Karachi, with 50 of them reserved exclusively for women in the form of the Pink EV Taxis. This dedicated service for women will be driven by female drivers, addressing the safety concerns and accessibility issues faced by women in the city’s public transportation system.
The introduction of EV taxis is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution in Karachi. The city’s inadequate mass-transit system has led to a large number of gasoline-engine vehicles on the road, contributing to high air pollution levels. The addition of EV taxis to the city’s transportation fleet will provide a much-needed respite for the residents of Karachi.
Earlier this year, Karachi received 30 hybrid and 50 electric buses as part of the Peoples Bus Service fleet, bringing the total number of vehicles to 300. The launch of EV taxis is a further step towards promoting sustainable and environmentally-friendly modes of transportation in the province.
