A Karachi city court has sent a driver to jail on a 14-day judicial remand for a deadly accident that killed two people on Karsaz Road earlier this week. The driver, who was arrested and booked for manslaughter charges, was produced in court after undergoing psychiatric treatment.
The accident occurred on Monday when the driver, who was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, hit three motorcycles and a car in an “extremely rash and negligent manner”. Two people, 60-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter Amna, were killed, while three others were injured.
The court initially granted a one-day police remand but later sent the driver to jail on a 14-day judicial remand. The investigation officer added section 322 (punishment for qatl-bis-sabab) of the Pakistan Penal Code to the case, making the charges non-bailable.
The victim’s counsel requested a probe into the “kind of drug” the suspect was allegedly under the influence of at the time of the accident. The court directed the investigation officer to produce a charge sheet on the next hearing.
