Judicial Commission to Meet Today to Appoint Ad Hoc SC Judges

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will meet today to consider appointing former judges as ad hoc judges to dispense with the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court. The move comes after retired Justice Maqbool Baqar declined the offer to become an ad hoc judge, following retired Justice Mushir Alam’s similar decision.

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has appreciated the JCP’s move, citing the need to clear the backlog of cases. However, some lawyers, including PTI Senator Hamid Khan, have criticized the proposed appointments, stating that they are unconstitutional.

The JCP, headed by CJP Qazi Faez Isa, will consider the appointment of former judges, including Mushir Alam, Maqbool Baqar, Mazhar Alam Miankhel, and Sardar Tariq Masood, as ad hoc judges. Only Sardar Tariq Masood and Mazhar Alam have conveyed their willingness to accept the offer so far.

Lawyers are divided on the issue, with some supporting the move and others opposing it. The Lahore High Court Bar Association has supported the stance of the Professional group, while the Punjab Bar Council’s Vice Chairman Kamran Bashir Mughal and Executive Committee Chairman Imran Akram Bodla have welcomed the decision.
