ISLAMABAD:During a closed-door Security Council meeting convened at Russia’s request to discuss the situation in Syria, the developments following the control of rebel forces in the country were addressed.
In a letter to the Security Council, the Israeli representative stated that Israel’s actions in the Golan Heights are limited and temporary. He further emphasized that Israel is not intervening in the conflict between Syrian armed groups, and that its actions are solely for its own security.
Saudi Arabia, during the meeting, expressed that Israel’s occupation of the buffer zone has harmed Syria’s security.
It is notable that following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, former Syrian President and his family were granted asylum by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, while the Iranian government has also established contacts with the new Syrian leadership.
Iran’s Foreign Minister stated that the attitude of the victorious Syrian forces towards Iran will determine the future of Syria-Iran relations.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has called for the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, urging all Syrian parties to demonstrate wisdom and restraint.
Hamas has congratulated the Syrian people on their struggle for freedom and justice, while the Lebanese group Hezbollah has warned that the changes in Syria could pose a danger.
Canada has welcomed the end of Bashar al-Assad’s government, while the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, and Greece have suspended processing the requests of Syrian refugees.
