Gaza ( The COW News Digital)The Israeli military has begun a large-scale ground offensive aimed at gaining full control over Gaza, escalating the months-long conflict that has already devastated the besieged territory.

According to a statement released by the Israeli army spokesperson, the initial phase of operations is underway, with forces reportedly securing parts of Gaza City’s outskirts. Officials described the campaign as a “step-by-step” strategy designed to dismantle Hamas’s influence across the region.

Israeli authorities confirmed preparations to mobilize nearly 60,000 reserve troops at the beginning of September to strengthen the assault and support ongoing military efforts. Analysts suggest this could mark the largest Israeli ground incursion into Gaza in recent years.

In anticipation of intensified fighting, military officials are expected to issue evacuation orders to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians residing in northern Gaza. Civilians will likely be directed toward temporary shelters and camps in southern areas of the enclave, a move that humanitarian organizations fear could lead to further displacement, suffering, and overcrowding.

Hamas has firmly rejected what it described as an Israeli plan to “empty Gaza of its people,” vowing to continue resistance despite mounting pressure. A Hamas spokesperson said the group would not allow forced displacement, calling it a violation of international law and an attempt at long-term demographic change.

The United Nations and multiple human rights organizations have voiced deep concern over the escalating offensive. International bodies are urging an immediate ceasefire and renewed dialogue to prevent further civilian casualties and humanitarian catastrophe. UN officials warned that Gaza’s already collapsing health, water, and food systems would not withstand prolonged warfare and mass displacement.

This latest offensive comes after months of heavy Israeli bombardments, which have already left large parts of Gaza in ruins and forced tens of thousands from their homes. With the ground assault now underway, fears are growing of an all-out humanitarian disaster.

Despite calls for restraint, Israeli officials insist the operation will continue until Hamas’s influence is “completely eliminated.” Observers say the coming weeks could prove decisive, not only for the future of Gaza but also for the broader stability of the Middle East.
