The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has removed objections to a petition challenging the installation of a firewall and internet slowdown, paving the way for a hearing on the matter. The petition, filed by a senior journalist, argues that the firewall infringes on citizens’ fundamental rights and seeks to halt its installation.

The IHC Chief Justice, Aamer Farooq, presided over the hearing and removed the objections raised by the Registrar’s Office. The petition will now be heard on Tuesday.

The petitioner’s counsel, Imaan Mazari, argued that the objections were unjustified and that the installation of the firewall should be subject to consultation with stakeholders and protection of basic rights. The petition also recognizes internet access as a fundamental human right under the Constitution, essential for livelihoods.

The respondents in the case include the cabinet division secretary, IT ministry secretary, interior ministry secretary, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and human rights ministry.
