In a significant development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered the removal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shibli Faraz’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL). The court’s decision came after the home ministry and DG passport failed to provide satisfactory arguments for keeping Faraz’s name on the ECL.
Faraz had filed a petition in the IHC seeking the removal of his name from the ECL, arguing that it was placed without prior notice. The court, presided over by Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri, directed the concerned authorities to remove Faraz’s name from the ECL and report back to the IHC.
In a separate case, the IHC has also ordered the removal of PTI leader Zartaj Gul’s name from the ECL. The court directed the Assistant Attorney General to submit a report within one week. During the hearing, the court inquired about the status of the cases against Zartaj Gul and was informed that there are two cases against her, both of which she has been granted bail for.
Justice Tariq Mahmood remarked that while the names of terrorists are not included in the ECL, only the names of assembly members are being included. The court questioned why Zartaj Gul’s name was included in the ECL despite being booked in cases that are minor and bailable.
The removal of Faraz and Gul’s names from the ECL is a significant development in the ongoing political saga in Pakistan. The PTI has been critical of the government’s decision to place its leaders on the ECL, terming it a political vendetta.
