Tehran (NNI): Iran has strongly protested against Afghanistan’s construction of the Pashdan Dam, claiming that the project will disproportionately restrict the flow of water.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the dam being built on the Herat River could limit water flow and potentially violate bilateral agreements between the two countries.
According to an AFP report, the two nations, which share a border of more than 900 kilometers, have long experienced tensions over water rights.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baqai, expressed deep concern and strong objection over the dam’s impact on water resources flowing into Iran, stressing that Iranian concerns had been raised with Afghan authorities in ongoing communications.
Last month, Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Abdul Ghani Baradar, in a video statement, said that the Pashdan project was nearing completion and water storage had already begun.
The dam, being constructed in Herat province, is expected to store around 54 million cubic meters of water, irrigating 13,000 hectares of agricultural land and generating 2 megawatts of electricity.
