Islamabad: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Sunday to discuss Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) approach during recent negotiations with the government.
Amid over a year of escalating tensions, the government and PTI initiated dialogue in late December to de-escalate the political climate. However, discussions stalled over key demands, including the formation of judicial commissions and the release of PTI detainees.
PTI withdrew from negotiations this week, boycotting the fourth round of talks, citing delays in forming judicial commissions to investigate the May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, protests. The government had proposed forming a parliamentary committee to facilitate talks, but PTI rejected the offer.
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, Naqvi and Sadiq reviewed recent political developments and PTI’s stance despite the government’s efforts to advance negotiations. The interior minister praised Ayaz Sadiq’s role in fostering political consensus and bringing both the government and opposition together.
The negotiating committees comprised representatives from various parties. The ruling coalition included members from the PML-N, PPP, MQM-P, PML-Z, and BAP, while the opposition team featured leaders from PTI, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, and Sunni Ittehad Council.
Both Naqvi and Sadiq also expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s improving economic situation and discussed measures taken by the government to address public grievances.
