Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has warned users not to trust images seen online, as content generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) can easily be mistaken for reality.

In a series of posts on Threads, Mosseri emphasized the importance of verifying the source of images and said that social platforms should help in identifying AI-generated content. He stated that as internet platforms, it is their responsibility to label or highlight content created by AI.

However, Mosseri acknowledged that sometimes content evades these labels, and thus, platforms should provide details about who is sharing the content so users can assess how much trust they should place in it.

Instagram has also made significant updates recently, including the addition of features like trial reels, live location sharing similar to WhatsApp, and potentially an AI-generated profile photo feature.

Mosseri’s caution mirrors previous warnings about AI chatbots, which can easily provide false information. This highlights the need for users to be cautious and not trust everything that is presented online.

Interestingly, Mosseri’s call for more support and transparency is not yet reflected on Meta’s platforms, although the company hinted at major changes to content regulations. His approach is similar to the community notes system used by X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, but it remains unclear when Meta will implement such systems.
