Farzana Begum, an Indian Muslim woman, has petitioned the Lahore High Court for custody of her two minor sons, alleging her Pakistani husband, Mirza Yousaf Elahi, illegally detained them in a Gulf country.
Farzana’s Ordeal
Farzana, 45, married Elahi in 2015 in the UAE, and they had two sons, Ibrahim and Ismail. In 2018, they moved to Lahore, where Elahi allegedly tortured and expelled her from their home, taking custody of their children. Farzana claims Elahi is her husband’s fourth wife and has six children from previous marriages.
Police Investigation
Punjab police have booked Elahi for allegedly torturing Farzana, seizing her passport, and hurling threats. However, Elahi fled the country, and the case is ongoing.
Court Proceedings
The Lahore High Court has taken up Farzana’s petition, and Justice Amjad Rafiq has asked her counsel to assist in bringing the minors back to Pakistan from the UAE. The case has been adjourned until next week.
Farzana’s Plea
Farzana insists she will not return to India without her children and is fighting for their custody. Her story highlights the challenges faced by women in similar situations, and the need for legal protection and support.
