In a surprising turn of events, hawkish Indian defence analysts have pointed fingers at the US, China, and Pakistan for the overthrow of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Hasina Wajid. Despite the clear indication that the massive student uprising was a result of domestic discontent, these analysts see a foreign hand at play.
Maj Gen GD Bakhshi (retd) blamed the US, China, and Pakistan for Hasina’s downfall, claiming that they had vested interests in Bangladesh. He alleged that the US wanted to take over Bangladeshi islands, while China wanted to dock its submarines in Bangladeshi waters. He also accused China of using Pakistan’s ISI agents to connect with the Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh.
TV anchor Arnab Goswami joined the chorus, confidently stating that the US deep state was involved in Hasina’s ouster. He went a step further, accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of seeking a Bangladesh-like regime change in India.
The British media outlet, BBC, took a more nuanced view, terming Hasina’s government collapse a blow to India. They attributed the downfall to India’s undue support to Hasina and interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.
It remains to be seen how these claims will play out, but one thing is clear – the situation in Bangladesh is complex, and external factors may have played a role. However, it is also important to acknowledge the domestic discontent that led to the massive student uprising.
