Okara, Pakistan( The COW News Digital) A sudden release of water from India into the Sutlej River has triggered a medium-level flood at Head Sulemanki in Okara district, raising alarm among local communities and prompting swift action from district authorities.

According to flood forecasting sources, the inflow at the Sutlej River was recorded at 104,664 cusecs, while the outflow stood at 98,353 cusecs. Experts have cautioned that if this flow continues, the situation could escalate into a high-level flood, posing significant threats to low-lying settlements.

Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Usman Javed confirmed that the district administration, along with Rescue 1122, civil defense teams, and revenue officials, have been placed on high alert. Emergency warnings have been issued, and evacuation from villages located along the riverbanks is already underway.

“The safety of our citizens is our top priority,” the Deputy Commissioner stated. “We will not allow Indian water aggression to claim innocent lives. Every measure is being taken to ensure the protection of people and property.”

Rescue and relief operations have been intensified, with teams deployed to assist residents in relocating to safer grounds. Temporary shelters and relief camps are being set up in anticipation of a worsening flood situation. Authorities have urged people living near the river to immediately evacuate and cooperate fully with rescue teams.

Officials also highlighted that contingency plans are in place should the water levels rise further. Special arrangements have been made for vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly, to ensure their safe relocation.

This sudden water release has once again raised concerns about India’s water management practices and its impact on downstream Pakistani communities. Experts warn that such unilateral actions not only endanger lives but also fuel regional tensions over transboundary water sharing.

As the administration remains on high alert, the people of Okara and adjoining areas face a tense wait, hoping the situation stabilizes before it escalates into a more devastating flood.
