India has been ranked among the top five countries with the worst driving records globally, according to a new survey by international agency Zutobi. The report highlights India’s alarming rate of traffic fatalities and widespread disregard for traffic laws as key contributors.

The survey places India fifth globally in terms of road accidents and attributes this to poor driving behavior, weak law enforcement, and a failing traffic management system. Despite some improvements in road infrastructure and tougher traffic regulations, enforcement remains largely ineffective, particularly in rural and urban areas.

Zutobi’s data further states that India continues to report one of the highest numbers of road-related deaths worldwide. Rampant violations, lack of traffic discipline, and a weak policing system were cited as major reasons behind the deadly outcomes on Indian roads.

In contrast, Norway has been ranked as the safest country for drivers for the fourth consecutive year, praised for its strict traffic enforcement, top-tier road infrastructure, and safe driving culture.

The United States also appeared poorly in the rankings, placed 51st globally, with the report noting inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws and high regional variance in traffic-related deaths.

Globally, the report showed some improvement, with the death rate per 100,000 people decreasing from 8.9 to 6.3.
