Imran Khan Announces Hunger Strike Over Lack of Confidence in Chief Justice

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has declared his intention to go on a hunger strike in jail, citing a lack of confidence in the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Rawalpindi\’s Adiala Jail, made this announcement during a media interaction, expressing his concerns over the Chief Justice\’s involvement in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party\’s ongoing legal battles.

Khan\’s legal team has raised objections to Justice Isa\’s repeated presence on the benches handling PTI and his personal cases, suggesting a potential bias in the legal proceedings. The former premier highlighted a recent decision by Justice Gulzar\’s five-member bench, which supported his team\’s stance that the Chief Justice should not preside over their cases.

During the media interaction, Khan also expressed disappointment over a cancelled meeting with his legal team, which was allegedly denied access to him by the jail superintendent, reportedly at the request of a jailed colonel. Khan lamented the missed opportunity to resolve internal disputes within his party.

Despite the challenges, Khan asserted that his party remains strong, stating, \”They are mistaken; they think my party will weaken. They don\’t realize that the party with the strongest voter base remains strong.\” He emphasized that the solution to Pakistan\’s issues lies in fair and transparent elections, rather than relying on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Khan expressed concern that Pakistan, which once led in various fields until 1990, is now being surpassed by other nations. He criticized the country\’s elite, stating, \”The country is controlled solely by the elite. What is the purpose of a president who increases the president\’s house expenditures? Electricity and gas bills have broken the people\’s backs.\”

The former premier revealed that discussions had taken place with the government, involving Omer Ayyub, Senate Shibli Faraz, and Ali Amin Gandapur, but negotiations were conducted under the condition that he would refrain from intervening against powerful entities in power. Khan emphasized his willingness to engage with Shehbaz Sharif\’s government, affirming its continuity.

Khan also addressed the issue of national security, highlighting the necessity of a strong relationship with Afghanistan. He stated, \”We cannot defeat TTP without it.\” He questioned why Bilawal Bhutto and the Foreign Minister did not visit Afghanistan, emphasizing that without support from the Afghan government, Pakistan cannot win the war against terrorism across a 2500-kilometer-long border.

In conclusion, Imran Khan\’s announcement of a hunger strike reflects his determination to seek justice and fair legal proceedings. His concerns over the Chief Justice\’s involvement in PTI cases and his personal legal battles have sparked debates about the impartiality of the judiciary. As the political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve, Khan\’s stance on fair elections and national security remains a significant aspect of the country\’s ongoing discourse.
