ICC Relocates Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to UAE Amidst Bangladesh Unrest

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced the relocation of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision comes amidst ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, which has led to travel advisories from several countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

The tournament, originally scheduled to take place in Bangladesh from October 3 to 20, 2024, will now be held in prominent stadiums in Dubai and Sharjah. Despite the change in venue, Bangladesh will retain its co-hosting rights alongside the UAE.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardyce expressed disappointment at the switch, citing the circumstances that led to the decision. “It’s a disappointment not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, but given the circumstances, we had no other choice. I would like to thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board for their efforts and the Emirates Cricket Board for filling in.”

The unrest in Bangladesh has been marked by sweeping student protests and the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with an interim government led by Dr. Yunus currently in place. The ICC has sought to reassure of its commitment to the cricketing future of Bangladesh, hoping to host future events in the country once the situation stabilizes.

The relocation of the tournament ensures the safety and security of players and staff, which the ICC deemed paramount. The UAE, with its world-class cricketing infrastructure, is well-equipped to host the tournament, which promises to be an exciting showcase of women’s cricket.
