The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed deep concern over Iran’s significant escalation in uranium enrichment, stating that the country has enriched uranium to levels necessary for developing nuclear weapons. According to the IAEA, Iran’s current enrichment level is 45 times higher than the threshold allowed under the 2015 nuclear deal.
According to the The COW News digital, in its latest report, the IAEA pointed out that Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed country currently enriching uranium to this extent, raising serious questions about the country’s nuclear intentions.
The report has triggered strong protests from Tehran. The Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected the IAEA findings as politically motivated and biased, asserting that the report exceeds the agency’s technical mandate. It emphasised that the document goes beyond the responsibilities given to the IAEA Director General.
The ministry reaffirmed that Iran’s military doctrine does not include nuclear weapons and stressed that there is no international ban on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. It also claimed full transparency in its nuclear program, stating there are no undisclosed facilities or activities in Iran.
Despite the mounting global concern, Iran maintains that its nuclear pursuits are solely for peaceful purposes and that it remains compliant with international protocols, albeit under its interpretation of them.
