Islamabad: The government has declined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) demand to form a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents. According to sources, the government’s negotiating team has finalized a detailed written response to PTI’s demands, addressing each point individually.
The response reportedly states that a judicial commission cannot be formed for the May 9 events, as these cases are already under judicial review. It further notes that some accused individuals have already been tried and sentenced by military courts. Judicial commissions, the government argues, are constituted only for matters not being adjudicated in courts.
Sources indicate that the government has also requested PTI to provide detailed lists of missing persons and arrested individuals related to the November 26 and May 9 events. “Without specific names and details, how can steps for their release be taken?” the response reportedly asks. The government also called on PTI to substantiate its claims of casualties during these events by providing evidence.
The government’s response will be submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly within the coming days. Upon receipt, the Speaker is expected to decide on the scheduling of a fourth round of negotiations.
In the previous round of talks between the two sides, PTI had submitted a written list of demands, including the formation of a judicial commission for the May 9 and November 26 incidents, as well as the release of party leaders and workers, including PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
