Islamabad: The second round of talks between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) committees, aimed at reducing political tensions, is underway at the Parliament House. Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, is presiding over the in-camera session.

The government’s delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah, Farooq Sattar, Aleem Khan, Irfan Siddiqui, Naveed Qamar, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Khalid Magsi, and Ejaz-ul-Haq. Representing PTI are Umar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, Ali Amin Gandapur, Salman Akram Raja, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

During the session, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq emphasized, “We are all Pakistanis, and the welfare of our nation is our collective responsibility. Dialogue will help reduce animosity and foster a better political environment.”

PTI’s National Assembly member Sher Afzal Marwat raised concerns over the recent pardoning of 19 convicts involved in the May 9 incidents, noting that PTI’s hopes now rest on the success of these negotiations. He underscored the need to resolve political instability and uncertainty in the country.

PTI’s Key Demands in Focus
Ahead of the talks, PTI leader Umar Ayub reiterated the opposition’s demands during a conversation with journalists. “Our demands are clear: the release of political prisoners and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, 2023,” he stated.

Sources reveal PTI plans to formally present these demands in writing during the meeting. The party views progress on these issues as a prerequisite for further negotiations. PTI leaders also expressed dissatisfaction with recent government statements regarding the dialogue and called for a conducive environment for meaningful discussions.

Pre-Negotiation Consultations with Imran Khan
Prior to the meeting, PTI’s delegation consulted with party chairman Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, where he is being held in connection with the Toshakhana case. PTI member Salman Akram Raja and Barrister Ali Zafar discussed the negotiation strategy with Khan, finalizing the party’s stance before returning to Islamabad.

Speaking informally to reporters outside Adiala Jail, Salman Akram Raja reaffirmed PTI’s commitment to its principles and expressed optimism about the success of the talks.

The dialogue between the government and PTI continues, with hopes of addressing key issues and paving the way for political stability.
