The national gas network system is now under threat, as pressure exceeding 5 BCF indicates a possible rupture at any moment.
Recent data on gas line peak pressure reveals that domestic gas demand has risen to 950 MMCFD, with 450 MMCFD of RLNG being redirected to residential consumers. However, the power sector is not utilizing its share of RLNG, which stands at 400 MMCFD. Consequently, gas usage for electricity generation has fallen below 300 MMCFD.
Despite hydro generation, electricity demand remains between 10,000 and 13,000 megawatts. This figure is expected to drop by 1,000 megawatts due to the ongoing canal closure until January 31, 2025.
The Power Division states that RLNG-based power plants are operated on an economic merit order (EMO), prioritizing the operation of cheaper or must-run plants first.
