An accountability court in Karachi has acquitted former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and others in a case related to alleged illegal appointments in the Pakistan State Oil (PSO). The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed the reference in 2020, accusing Abbasi and co-accused Arshad Mirza of misusing their authority while appointing Shaikh Imamul Haq and Yaqoob Sattar to key positions in PSO, causing loss to the national exchequer.

However, on Monday, the NAB withdrew the case, stating that no evidence of personal gain was found against the accused persons. The accountability court II judge subsequently acquitted Abbasi and others in the case.

The NAB had alleged that Abbasi, as minister for petroleum and natural resources, had illegally appointed Shaikh Imamul Haq and Yaqoob Sattar as the managing director and deputy managing director (finance) of PSO, respectively. However, after investigating the matter, the NAB found no evidence of personal gain or corruption, leading to the withdrawal of the reference.
