A British-American journalist, Charles Glass, was deported from Pakistan on Wednesday after trying to secure a meeting with former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated. Glass, 73, is a renowned author and journalist who specializes in the Middle East and World War II. He has worked for prominent media organizations such as Newsweek, ABC TV, and The Telegraph.
According to sources, Glass was visited by a large police contingent at the residence of Islamabad-based senior journalist Zahid Hussain. The police informed Glass that his visa had been cancelled and he had five hours to leave the country. Despite arguing with the police, Glass was eventually forced to leave Pakistan and was deported to the Middle East.
Glass had been trying to meet Imran Khan at Adiala jail, where Khan is being held. He was spotted outside the jail alongside Khan’s sister Aleema. The deportation of Glass has raised concerns about press freedom in Pakistan.
Shahzad Akbar, a former aide of Imran Khan, confirmed the deportation on social media. “There are reports of the deportation of British journalist Charles Glass who was visiting Pakistan to see @ImranKhanPTI at Adiala prison,” he wrote.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan, particularly those trying to cover sensitive topics or meet with high-profile figures like Imran Khan.
