Indian police have arrested a 50-year-old female doctor from Chennai for her alleged involvement in the illegal removal and sale of kidneys from impoverished individuals. Six others, including three associates and three Bangladeshi nationals, were also detained for their roles in the international kidney transplant racket.

According to police sources, the racket operated from New Delhi to Bangladesh, preying on economically disadvantaged individuals in Bangladesh with promises of monetary compensation and employment opportunities in India. Once in India, their kidneys would be surgically removed without proper medical authorization.

The female doctor is accused of conducting 15 to 16 kidney transplants as part of this illegal network, which has been operating since 2019. The Indian police reports reveal that the gang targeted vulnerable individuals, exploiting their desperation for financial gain.

This arrest comes as a significant breakthrough in the crackdown on illegal organ trafficking in India and Bangladesh. The authorities’ efforts to combat this criminal enterprise have led to the dismantling of a significant portion of the racket, and further investigations are underway.
