As the world grapples with the re-emergence of monkeypox, experts are cautioning against panic. Despite the virus’s higher mutation rate and increased lethality, they assure that the situation is under control.

At a recent symposium titled “Monkeypox: Evolution and Clinical Symptoms,” held at the University of Karachi, leading experts shared their insights on the virus’s evolution, clinical symptoms, and implications.

Dr. Saeed Qureshi, Vice Chancellor of Dow University, emphasized the importance of understanding the virus’s history, stating that the first case was reported 50 years ago. He encouraged students to share their knowledge with the broader public to combat misinformation and promote awareness.

Dr. Mushtaq Hussain, Principal Professor of Biotechnology at Dow University, delved into the virus’s evolution, highlighting its high mutation rate. He revealed that recent cases belong to the alpha or clade 1 strain, which is more lethal. However, he noted that the evolution of monkeypox is unlikely to follow the same path as lumpy skin disease, another member of the poxvirus family.

Dr. Muniba Ahsan, Consultant of Infectious Diseases at Dow University, provided a comprehensive overview of the current outbreak. She confirmed that the situation in Pakistan is not yet alarming and urged the public to remain calm.

While cases have been reported in 13 countries, experts stress that the risk of transmission is low. They advise taking precautions, such as practicing good hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.
