The European Union has expressed concern over the sentences handed down to 25 civilians by military courts in Pakistan.
In a statement issued by the European External Action Service, the EU stated that these decisions are seen as contradictory to Pakistan’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), particularly regarding the protection of civil and political rights.
The EU emphasized that according to Article 14 of the ICCPR, every individual has the right to a fair and public hearing by a competent, independent, and impartial tribunal, and the right to effective legal representation.
On December 21, military courts in Pakistan sentenced 25 individuals involved in the May 9 incident to prison terms ranging from 2 to 10 years.
