Karachi, Pakistan – K-Electric, the city’s sole power provider, has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase electricity prices by Rs5.45 per unit under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA). This proposed hike comes at a time when many Karachi residents are already struggling with high electricity bills and frequent power outages.
The requested increase includes Rs2.53 per unit for May and an additional Rs2.92 per unit for June, citing rising fuel costs. NEPRA is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter, where it will review K-Electric’s proposal and consider input from various stakeholders before making a final decision.
The FCA mechanism allows power companies to adjust electricity rates based on fluctuations in fuel prices, ensuring financial stability. However, this increase will directly affect the cost of living and business operations in the city.
Karachi residents have already faced significant price hikes, including a Rs3.5 per unit increase announced by NEPRA and a hike ranging from Rs1.90 to Rs3.28 per unit. The government has also sought a 25% increase in the base national electricity tariff, effective from July 1, 2025.
The proposed increase has sparked concerns among consumers, who are already grappling with high electricity bills and frequent power outages. The decision by NEPRA will be closely watched by consumers and industry observers alike.
