Athens: The total number of Pakistani fatalities in recent boat accidents off the coast of Greece has risen to 40, following a series of maritime incidents.
The Greek Coast Guard has concluded its rescue operations and declared missing individuals presumed dead. According to sources, 35 Pakistani nationals lost their lives across three separate incidents involving different vessels.
Government sources revealed that approximately 5,000 Pakistanis are currently in Libya, aspiring to reach Europe through various means arranged by local and Pakistani agents.
Separately, reports indicate that a legal visa process was followed for travel from Pakistan to Libya, suggesting organized migration channels in play.
It is important to note that earlier incidents involved the sinking of vessels near the island of Crete, resulting in the confirmed deaths of five individuals, including one Pakistani citizen. Another four Pakistani fatalities were reported on a subsequent day, with dozens still unaccounted for. Among those rescued, 47 Pakistani nationals were included.
Authorities and diplomats continue to monitor developments closely, amid concerns about irregular migration and the safety of those attempting dangerous sea voyages.
