In a significant escalation of violence in India’s Manipur state, insurgents used drones to drop explosives on security forces, killing one civilian and wounding six others. The attack, carried out by alleged Kuki rebels, marks a new level of sophistication in the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

The violence in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has resulted in at least 200 deaths and has been fueled by longstanding tensions over land and public jobs. The use of drones to deploy explosives is a new and worrying development, according to police.

The attack occurred outside the state capital Imphal and injured an eight-year-old girl, three civilians, and two police officers. The police suspect that highly trained professionals with technical expertise and support may have been involved.

This escalation of violence highlights the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and for addressing the underlying issues driving the violence.
