South African batter David Miller has broken former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag’s 23-year-old record for the fastest century in ICC Champions Trophy history.
On Wednesday, at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Miller achieved the feat during the second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand. Chasing a daunting target of 363 runs, Miller reached his century on the final ball of the match, completing 100 runs off just 67 deliveries. However, despite his heroic effort, South Africa fell short of victory.
Miller’s unbeaten knock of 100 runs included 10 fours and four sixes, making him the fastest centurion in the history of the Champions Trophy.
Previously, the record belonged to former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who had scored a century off 77 balls against England in Colombo during the 2002 Champions Trophy.
Earlier in the 2025 Champions Trophy, on February 22, Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis had equaled Sehwag’s record by scoring a century off 77 balls against England in Lahore.
Despite Miller’s outstanding performance, South Africa suffered a 50-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the semi-final. Batting first, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 362/6. In response, South Africa managed to score 312/9 in 50 overs.
With this victory, New Zealand has advanced to the final, where they will face India on Sunday, March 9, in Dubai.
