Dairy and cattle farmers in Karachi are pushing for a substantial increase in the price of milk, seeking an additional Rs80 per liter ¹. This move comes after a previous agreement with the Karachi commissioner to maintain the milk price at Rs220 per liter until December 2024. However, the farmers are now advocating for a revised price of Rs300 per liter, citing rising costs associated with dairy farming, including feed, maintenance, and transportation, which have significantly impacted their profitability.

The dairy and cattle farmers association has formally presented their request to the Karachi Commissioner, urging the issuance of a new price notification to reflect the proposed hike. The association argues that without this increase, they will struggle to sustain their operations and meet the growing demands of the market.

On June 13, the commissioner of Karachi notified a new milk price after negotiations with the dairy farmers association, resulting in a retail price of Rs220 per liter, a Rs20 per liter increase ¹. The wholesale and dairy farmer prices of milk were fixed at Rs205 and Rs195 per liter, respectively.

This development comes amidst a backdrop of rising inflation and increasing costs for dairy farmers. The farmers’ association is seeking an official notification to endorse the proposed price change, which would significantly impact consumers and the dairy industry in Karachi.
