The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has taken a significant step towards addressing the sport’s “broken and unsustainable” schedule by launching a comprehensive review. The current model has been deemed “confusing and chaotic,” with unclear interplay between international cricket and domestic leagues, forcing players to choose between representing their country and advancing their careers.
The WCA aims to create a clear and coherent calendar for all, allowing international cricket and domestic leagues to coexist harmoniously. A six-strong panel, comprising experts such as Tom Harrison and Sana Mir, will work with independent consultants to produce recommendations for the WCA board.
Research has highlighted the pressing need for change, with 81% of players expressing concerns about the physical toll of the domestic fixture list. The lack of proper rest and recovery time has taken a significant impact on player welfare, and the WCA is determined to address this issue.
The review is a welcome move, as the current schedule has been criticized for its lack of clarity and coherence. The WCA’s efforts to create a more sustainable and player-friendly schedule will benefit the sport as a whole, allowing players to perform at their best and reducing the risk of burnout.
The WCA’s chair, Heath Mills, emphasized the need for change, stating, “We are fortunate that cricket is spoilt for choice and has three core formats across both the international game and domestic leagues. However, to date, the game’s leadership has collectively failed to come together to establish a clear and coherent global structure in which they can co-exist.”
The review is expected to produce recommendations that will benefit players, boards, and fans alike. By creating a clearer and more sustainable schedule, the WCA hopes to promote a healthier and more enjoyable game for all involved.
