The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken a significant step towards curbing illegal mobile phone use in the country. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the authority blocked an impressive 5,294 mobile phones involved in fraudulent activities. Additionally, 4,507 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers associated with unlawful use were also blocked.

The PTA’s crackdown didn’t stop there. The authority blacklisted 113 national ID cards and issued warnings to 19,730 mobile numbers found to be involved in various illegal activities. This move is part of the PTA’s efforts to ensure that mobile phone SIMs are not used for nefarious purposes.

The blocking of SIMs is conducted under different categories, with the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Directorate General ISI, and Signals Directorate GHQ providing directives on matters related to national security. In one instance, the PTA blocked 465 SIMs identified as being used by criminals in the “Kacha” areas of Sindh.

To further curb the illegal use of mobile phone SIMs, the PTA has launched a phased approach. The first phase, which began on August 16, 2024, targeted SIMs registered with fake credentials or canceled ID cards. The second phase, which started on September 2, 2024, focuses on blocking SIMs linked to expired ID cards. The third phase will target the deactivation of SIMs registered under the names of deceased individuals.

The PTA has made it clear that the illegal use of mobile phone SIMs will not be tolerated under any circumstances. This move is a significant step towards ensuring that mobile phone use is safe and secure in Pakistan.
