Peshawar High Court heard a petition challenging the increase in motorway toll tax. The petitioner’s lawyer, Azeem Dad Advocate, argued that the government had raised toll taxes through a notification issued on January 31, 2025.
According to the lawyer, a 100% toll tax hike was imposed on those without an M-Tag. The government had already increased toll tax twice in 2024, raising the Peshawar to Charsadda toll from Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 and later from Rs. 40 to Rs. 60—a 50% increase within a year.
The petition further stated that the additional 100% hike for non-M-Tag users was illegal and had caused hardships for the public.
Justice S.M. Atiq Shah remarked that the additional tax was evident. The petitioner requested a stay order to halt the extra toll charges until a final decision was made. The court responded that an appropriate order would be issued.
Subsequently, the court issued a notice to the federal government and adjourned the hearing.
