Bogotá( The COW News Digital) In a powerful gesture of humanitarian solidarity, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that gold seized from drug traffickers will be sent to Gaza to support the treatment of war-affected Palestinian children and assist in the reconstruction of the besieged territory.

President Petro made the announcement on social media, stating that the recovered gold — previously confiscated during anti-narcotics operations — would now serve a higher purpose. “This gold will not remain in vaults,” Petro said. “It will be transformed into hope for children in Gaza who have lost everything. It will help rebuild hospitals, schools, and homes destroyed by war.”

Calling the initiative a “symbol of humanity and global solidarity,” the Colombian leader reaffirmed his government’s moral commitment to stand with the Palestinian people. “We are taking concrete action to aid Gaza,” he declared. “Colombia stands with the oppressed, and in this moment, we stand with Palestine.”

President Petro further revealed that Colombia will present a resolution at the United Nations to establish an international reconstruction force for Gaza, aimed at coordinating global humanitarian efforts for post-war recovery.

The Colombian president has long been known for his pro-Palestinian stance and vocal criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. He has repeatedly condemned what he calls “collective punishment” and “violations of human rights” by the Israeli government, urging world leaders to adopt a stronger moral position on the conflict.

This is not the first time Colombia has extended humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Last year, Bogotá offered medical treatment to dozens of injured Palestinian children, who were flown to Colombian hospitals for care and rehabilitation.

International observers and human rights organizations have welcomed Petro’s latest move, calling it a “bold and meaningful act of resistance against global indifference.” Analysts note that the decision also reflects a growing trend among Latin American nations to assert independent foreign policies on Middle Eastern conflicts, prioritizing humanitarian principles over political alliances.

As Gaza continues to face widespread devastation, Petro’s initiative may inspire other nations to explore creative ways of turning domestic law enforcement gains — such as confiscated assets — into resources for international humanitarian relief.
