Karachi: Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, has emphasized that his government is continuing development work despite limited resources and IMF-imposed directives.
Speaking to the media during an inspection of the Hub Canal, Shah noted ongoing progress in Karachi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects. He expressed satisfaction with the ground realities, stating, “Criticism is frequent, but seeing the progress on-site is encouraging.”
The Chief Minister revealed that the World Bank has assured funding for a $1.6 billion project. He acknowledged the aging infrastructure of Karachi’s water supply system, which is under strain due to the city’s growing population.
He also highlighted that the government plans to draw 200 MGD (million gallons per day) of water from the Hub Dam, with a new canal for 100 MGD expected to be completed by August. Shah further mentioned that the government is working on the lining of canals for the K-IV water project, with additional work being undertaken on the KB Feeder to benefit the people of Thatta and Jamshoro districts.
Murad Ali Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Sindh’s water share, referencing PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s firm stance on creating a new canal on the Indus River to address water shortages.
“Our consistent position has been that Sindh’s rightful share of water will not be compromised,” he stated, reaffirming his government’s dedication to meeting the province’s water and development needs.
