MURREE (The COW News Digital) – Authorities in Murree, the scenic hill station known as the “Queen of Hills,” have issued a high alert following the possibility of a cloudburst within the next 24 to 48 hours. The warning has prompted urgent advisories for both residents and tourists to remain vigilant and avoid risky areas, especially near streams and nullahs.
Deputy Commissioner Murree, in an official statement, cautioned the public against venturing near waterways during heavy downpours. “There is a strong likelihood of intense rainfall which may trigger flash floods, landslides, and dangerous surges in local streams,” he warned, adding that precautionary measures must be strictly observed.
The alert comes amid widespread monsoon devastation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the death toll from rain-related incidents has risen to 323. Rescue operations continue in flood-hit areas, while authorities brace for more rainfall expected in the coming days.
In response to the escalating threat, the Punjab Tourism Department has also released a comprehensive advisory for visitors and tourism-related businesses. All field offices have been directed to maintain close coordination with district administrations and emergency operation centers. According to the advisory, emergency control rooms will be established at all major tourist and heritage sites, with focal persons designated for rapid communication with rescue teams and local officials.
Emergency staff have been instructed to remain on high alert, equipped with first aid facilities and trained to respond promptly to any crisis. Authorities also ordered the display of emergency helpline numbers at all tourist points to ensure quick assistance during unexpected situations.
Furthermore, the advisory restricts entry into rivers, streams, and other high-risk zones in Murree and surrounding areas. Citizens and travelers have been urged to stay updated with the latest weather alerts issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) before planning any journeys.
Meanwhile, in a separate move to support flood-affected populations, the government has introduced a facility for free calls in disaster-hit regions, enabling people to stay connected during emergencies.
Officials emphasized that safety must be the top priority during the ongoing monsoon spell. “We appeal to the public to limit travel during severe weather conditions and to report any emergencies through designated helplines,” the advisory concluded.
