China has issued a warning to Japan, stating that it will take severe economic retaliatory measures if Japan further restricts sales and servicing of chipmaking equipment to Chinese firms. According to a report by Bloomberg News, China has conveyed this message to Japan through multiple meetings between officials.
The warning comes after Japan began restricting exports of 23 types of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in July, aligning its technology trade controls with US efforts to curb China’s advanced chip-making capabilities.
Toyota Motor has privately expressed concerns to Japanese officials that China may retaliate by cutting Japan’s access to essential minerals required for automotive production.
China’s foreign ministry has stated that the country opposes the “artificial disruption” of global production and supply chain stability, as well as the politicization of normal economic and trade cooperation.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Mao Ning, emphasized China’s commitment to maintaining global production and supply chain safety and stability, implementing fair and non-discriminatory export control measures.
The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between China, Japan, and the US regarding technology trade controls and chipmaking capabilities.
